Why I'm Dedicating my Life to Saving the Environment
I'm currently going into my senior year at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where I study Environmental Communication with a minor in Environmental Writing and Rhetoric. Throughout my journey as an environmentalist, I've often been questioned why I chose this career choice, I most likely won't be making much money and people often argue there's not much we can do at this point, we're going to die anyway. Well at least we can die trying to improve the world. From my perspective the most important issue facing the world today is climate change and the multitude of humans mistreatment that have led to climate change. All the political issues in the world mean nothing if we don't have our Earth. In that way I think every social, economic and political issue is an environmental issue. Without land we wouldn't have agricultural to feed our growing population, without fundamental resources like water and forest we could not exist. Therefore the environment is at the root of every national issue. Not only do we need nature for our primary survival needs but it is necessary for our mental and spiritual health.
There is a concept called Ecopsychology, which is defined as the interconnectedness of humans mentally, spiritually and physically to the natural world. In every aspect of our being we need nature because it is our origin from which we were all derived, not only does that intrinsically connect us to the Earth but also to each other. Personally, I've always felt there is something more real and meaningful than the mundane worker-driven American lifestyle that I see promoted all around me. Society convinces us that our purpose is to work a 9 to 5 day job, do as we're told and buy pointless things to fill the emptiness in our lives. We've been fooled to think materialism is what fills the emotional needs we have as humans. When the truth is we are depressed and longing for more because of our growing separation from our true home, the Earth. With every way that we chose to destroy, dismember, decimate and dismantle the Earth, there grows a universial consciousness of sadness and fear. We are losing our life source while at the same time being swayed to believe there is no alternative route than the one society has paved for us, which would include a blindness to environmental destruction and social issues. This is heavy stuff, but it's why I fight to reveal the veil over society and am dedicated to finding solutions to save our world and all our lives, the Earth always comes first.
Before environmentalists can start making decisions, we need to educate as many people as we can to the dire state of our environment and what it means for the human population. We need to recognize the destructiveness of our current lifestyles and how we can slowly evolve into more sustainable alternatives, always having nature in our minds. We need to foster a global awareness for the current environmental disaster, so anyone who reads this, you would be doing a great and important deed to pass this message along. We can reform our unsustainable world with YOUR help. Pass this along! Let your friends and family know the way our society runs now is not our only option.
